Annunciation

The Hour of Matins: Annunciation

Medieval artists often depicted Mary reading, steeping
herself in the ancient scriptures of her people or, in a
lovely bit of anachronism, praying with a Book of Hours.
Already she is a woman immersed in the word.  Mary
opens herself to the invitation that the archangel Gabriel
bears, says her radical yes. In the darkness of the womb,
the Word takes root, becomes flesh, waits.
