I lose perspective. I get so caught up in the agendas and ambitions, the successes and failures, the longings and frustrations and fulfillments of my day-to-day struggle that I’m always in danger of forgetting that I am but a pilgrim in this world. That’s when I open my psalter to number 84, a favorite of the peripatetic monks of every century.
I Will Be A Sparrow

To be a pilgrim
Have the road that leads to you
In my heart and in my mind
Find these pools of blessing
Along the dusty way
The driest vale wet with tears of joy
Hear my prayer Almighty
You are my only strength
Until I appear before you
I will be a sparrow
In the house of God
I will be a sparrow
And the altar of the Lord
Will be my home
To be in your house
Within your shelter
Peace within your walls
No other home have I
In all the world
No other home do I seek
Hear my prayer Almighty
You are my only strength
Until I appear before you
I will be a sparrow
In the house of God
I will be a sparrow
And the altar of the Lord
Will be my home
